BOONE, Iowa---Bids for the demolition of three downtown buildings will be received by the city on Thursday. Boone City Administrator Luke Nelson said on the KWBG "Tuned In" Program Wednesday, the plan will be to review the bids then make a recommendation to the City Council for their meeting on Monday. Nelson says the specifications for the demolition calls for the work to begin within 30-days and to be completed within 60-days of the acceptance of the bid by the city.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone's annual Johnny Appleseed Tree Planting will take place Saturday and will cover several different parts of the city. Phil Brown is Johnny Appleseed, replacing Dr. John Murphy who handled the duties for more than 20-years. Brown says the plantings this Saturday will be around the new baseball field at DMACC, near the south enterance to the city and in McHose Park. Many of the dollars allocated to tree plantings are now being diverted to tree maintenance.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council and the Boone County Board of Supervisors will hold a joint meeting, Wednesday evening in the Auditorium of the Boone City Hall. The meeting will allow both bodies to work on solving some problems with the Industrial Park on the east side of the city. Most of the area is outside the city limits, but the city is working on the Corporal Snedden Drive overpass. The project will require the city to annex some of the ground to proceed. In the meantime, the Supervisors have been approached about seeking a RISE Grant from the state for work on the roads in the industrial park. Supervisor Bill Lusher says a discussion is needed to determine directions for the future.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Cares is hoping for a couple of good days at the end of the month for people to stop at the Boone County Hospital and bid on their decorated chairs. The chairs are on display in the Atrium of the Hospital and will be sold through a silent auction. This is the second year for the fund raiser for the county wide organization. Cassie Clyde with Boone County Cares says all proceeds go to support programs working to child abuse prevention.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Zoning Commission is discussing the future of a Conservation District Overlay in certain areas of Boone County. A conservation overlay is described as a means of protecting environmentally fragile land. The current issue is that maps, identifying portions of the county that would have an overlay have not been included in the county zoning ordinance. But, the text describing the purpose is included. County Planning and Development Director Sandra Monck will work with the Commission on guidelines and intended application of the conservation tool. The Commission has already forwarded a recommendation to the Supervisors to use a Conservation Overlay on property near the Ledges State Park up for rezoning for a minor subdivision.

BOONE, Iowa---The final week in April has turned very busy. The Boone City Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday to take action to refinance bonds originally sold to construct the city water plant in the 1990's. It was almost a year ago the council discussed and approved moving ahead with the refinancing, but the actual work was delayed for a various reasons. The Council still aniticpates some very good savings by refinancing water revenue bonds. Water revenue bonds means the bonds are paid for with income from the sale of water. The expected savings will be in reduced interest payments.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors have a very lengthy agenda for their regular Tuesday meeting, but will take time to participate in the Kick Off of the Boone County Wellness Walking Program. The formal Kick Off will be held at the Boone County Courthouse at 11:30 Tuesday morning.

OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden City Council tabled action on a nuisance abatement on a downtown building location until their next regular meeting in May. The abatement was sent to Daryl Johnson, and Johnson was to meet with the Council in a special meeting last Wednesday to talk about plans for saving the building or demolishing the structure. The Council is also concerned about a neighboring building that shares a wall with Johnson's building and is also considered a nuisance. Mayor Kieth Berg says the City is discussing various options with Johnson and hopes to resolve the talks by the May 4th meeting.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Hospital Board of Trustees this week, accepted the resignation of Tim Buckner as member of the Board. Buckner was entering his 20th year as Trustee with the Boone County Hospital. The Board then took action to appoint Denny Kollbaum to fill Buckner's unexpired term. The appointment will be until the next general election, unless a petition is received calling for a special election.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone Area Humane Society will kick-off their annual fund raiser, Wednesday evening at the Boone County Fair Grounds. The 29th Annual Rummage and Bake Sale will begin at 6:00 PM and there is an admission charge for the first evening. There will be free admission on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Rummage and Bake Sale is the biggest fund raiser for the Society. The second biggest begins Wednesday, April 28th. Dog Obedience Classes will be held at McHose Park in Boone.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council found out Monday that Economic Development Director Daryl Rensink intends to retire the end of 2010. Rensink came out of retirment in 2004 and became interim City Administrator when then Administrator Brent Trout was called to active duty. Upon Trout's return, Mayor John Slight convinced Rensink to remain as the Economic Development Director. Since that time, he once again became interim Administrator and led to search that result in the hiring of current Administrator Luke Nelson. Slight says Rensinks announcement will give the city time to decide how they want to pursue Economic Development in 2011.

BOONE, Iowa---A 61-year old Ames man has apparently died from injuries sustained in a single vehicle rollover in northern Boone County Monday. Sheriff Ron Fehr says Joel K. Martin was traveling west on 110th Street near "Q" Avenue. Fehr says the investigation showed that Martin's vehicle rolled several times. Martin was taken by ambulance to the Boone County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone School Board members approved the district's budget for the next fiscal year, and were able to get it done because of early retirements. The Board has accepted 8-early retirement requests this year and will not be replacing the positions. Superintendent Brad Manard says the Boone District has eliminated quite a few positions over the past couple of years and Board members are concerned about the impact on students. Manard says since most of the staff reductions are at the high school level, there will be fewer electives for students.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone Mayor John Slight was not happy Monday, when the Boone City Council learned that they will now have to have a special election to fill a vacancy in the city's 4th ward. City Attorney Alan Schroeder told the Council that they have surpassed the 40-day limit for making an appointment to fill the vacancy. Saturday, April 17th was the 40th day. Last month, the Council voted to fill the vacancy, but did so with a secret ballot which violated the state's open records law. A special election will probably be scheduled after the June Primary Election.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors will be spending time reviewing getting updated on what's called a Conservation District Overlay. The concept is being used for the first time on a rezoning request on property in the Des Moines River Valley, near the Ledges State Park. The property is actually being rezoned to handle a minor subdivision, but because of the location, the County Zoning Commission has recommended using the Conservation District Overlay. The overlay is expected to help preserve environmentally fragile land.

BOONE, Iowa---The Liar's Club of Des Moines has requested a chance to speak to the Boone City Council about options for operating a bar and dance hall at 1805 Mamie Eisenhower Avenue. The address is the former Venue and according to the City Building Department, will require some minor construction and general clean-up to meet city code. City Build Official Ed Higgins also notes there are parking lot issues. The previous Venue owner filed for bankruptcy last year.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council will go through the process of appointing a new council member to fill a vacancy created with the resignation in March of 4th Ward Council member Glenn Thompson. At the last regular meeting, the Council voted by secret ballot to name Boone businessman Kevin Hicks to fill the position. The secret ballot was a violation of the state's open records and open meetings law. Hicks, former Council member Travis Stevenson and former Park Commission member Steve McCoy had expressed an interest in being appointed.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says a deputy is investigating a single vehicle rollover that occurred north of Boone early Friday morning. Fehr says the Department was notified by the Emergency Room at the Boone County Hospital when 4-unidentified people arrived seeking treatment for various injuries. So far, the investigation revealed that there were 6-people in the vehicle, 4-sought treatment. Fehr says the vehicle has been impounded and the investigation is continuing.

BOONE, Iowa---Watch for brightly colored people walking around Boone County Saturday. Volunteers are taking part in the first "Keep Boone County Scenic" litter pickup campaign. Hundreds of people have signed up to go for a walk and pickup litter. Volunteers are then expected to get the litter back to a dumpster in the 9th Street parking lot in downtown Boone. Eventually, the dumpster will be weighed and we'll find out just how much litters been removed.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone School Board this week adopted a budget which will mean a reduction in staff once again. 8-fulltime positions are being eliminated through early retirement. Two half time positions are being reduced and some of the days on the extended FFA contract are being reduced. Superintendent Brad Manard says the reductions and other cost savings will result in a nearly $722,000 savings. He says the district needed to save at least $710,000. Board members continue to express concerns about the loss of staff and the impact it's having on students.

BOONE, Iowa---20 different agencies and organizations benefit from this year's Boone County Community Endowment Grant awards. Chip Baltimore serves as the Chair of the county wide group that awarded more than $105,000. Baltimore says the grants will combine with other matching funds of nearly $624,000 for projects impacting Boone County residents. This marks the 5th year grant awards have been handed out. More than 30-applications had been received, seeking more than $200,000.

BOONE, Iowa---Work will begin on narrowing the list of candidates for the job of Boone County Naturalist. The Boone County Conservation Board has budgeted for the position and is now working at filling that job. This week, the Conservation Board designated a small committee to review applications and begin the process of narrowing the field. A small group of finalists will be developed for future interviews. Plans are to fill the position of early summer.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone Park Commission has accepted an offer from the former Boone City Engineer to develop a plan to try and restore the city's ice skating pond. Dale Eschlimann met with the Park Commission this week and described a possible solution that might be attempted for less money then a complete dredging of the site. The Park Commission was told the it would cost well over $100,000 to dredge the site and make it usable. Eschlimann told the Commission he tought they could put together a project that would cost substantially less. He offered to provide the plans to the Commission free of charge.

BOONE, Iowa---A Ballard High School soccer player will apparently make a full recovery. Boone School Superintendent Brad Manard says the incident happened during the Boone-Ballard soccer game Tuesday evening. Manard says he visited with Ballard officials early Wednesday and all indications are the player will recover. The unidentified player was taken to the Boone County Hospital and then flowen to Blank Childrens Hospital in Des Moines. The soccer match was cancelled after the incident.

BOONE, Iowa---There was a packed house on the Boone Campus of Des Moines Area Community College as family and friends turned out to support members of Company "C", 2nd Battalion, 147th Aviation, a Boone based unit headed to Kosovo on the peace keeping mission. Lt. Governor Patty Judge represented Governor Chet Culver and spoke to the nearly 65-soldiers that fly and maintain Blackhawk helicopters based in Boone. The unit is expected to leave Wednesday and will travel to Indiana for additional training before heading overseas.

BOONE, Iowa---Construction projects at the Boone Municipal Airport are moving ahead and the Airport Commission is expected to set the time frame for bids and work to be done on a planned Taxiway Project. The Commission already has new hangar construction underway, which includes an expanded paved apron. All the projects have received substantial amounts of grant funding from both the federal and state governments.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Conservation Board expects to move ahead with a plan to hire a Naturalist. Previously, the Conservation Board and the Landfill shared the cost of a Naturalist, but that arrangement ended a couple of years ago. The Landfill went ahead and hired their Environmental Education Coordinator and have funded that position. Now the Conservation Board wants to have their own Naturalist to develop and make available to the public. The Conservation Board plans to set up their interview schedule when they meet Monday.

BOONE, Iowa---Volunteers are still be sought for next Saturday's "Keep Boone County Scenic" litter pickup event. The first time effort does have some volunteers, but can use more according to Landfill Administrator Scott Smith. Volunteers will gather on Saturday, April 17th and will go for a walk, picking up litter. Everything will be returned to a central location so an accurate weight can be determined. BOONE, Iowa---The Johnny Appleseed Tree Planting program has been a part of the Boone Community for 25-years. This year, the program may struggle a little, because the City Council asked the Park Commission to use money allocated for tree planting to be used for tree maintenance. Phil Brown has taken over the reigns of Johnny Appleseed and says redirected the funding has left the program a little short of funds for future tree plantings. The City Council had ordered no street tree plantings, which have been rare in recent years. This year the focus is around the new baseball field at DMACC, the gateway enterance to the community and in McHose Park. Donations for Johnny Appleseed can be made at City Hall and can only be used for tree plantings.

BOONE, Iowa---A decision by the Boone City Council this week, naming Kevin Hicks as the new 4th Ward Councilmember will have to take place all over again. The Council voted by secret ballot Monday and found out after the fact that a secret ballot is a violation of the state's open records law. City Administrator Luke Nelson says it was not intentional and the Council will go through the appointment process when they meet again on April 19th. Three Councilmembers voted for Kevin Hicks, two voted for former Councilmember Travis Stevenson and one voted for former Park Commission member Steve McCoy.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce's Merchants Association is celebrating "Race Days 2010" into this weekend, in recognition of the new season at the Boone Speedway. Chamber Executive Director Richard Baker said on KWBG Thursday that the Boone Speedway draws thousands of spectators all summer long for weekly racing. He also noted that Supernationals in September continues to attract tens of thousands of spectators from all over the nation. Saturday racing begins at 5:00 PM.

BOONE, Iowa---Members of the Iowa Army National Guard based in Boone will receive a formal sendoff Sunday, April 11th as the unit prepares to leave for Kosovo and become part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission. The soldiers are with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 147th Aviation which flies and maintains the UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopters. The most recent deployment for the unit was Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006-2007. The public is invited to the Sunday sendoff at 2:00 at Des Moines Area Community College in Boone.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone Mayor John Slight says demolition is expected to move ahead in downtown Boone. Slight says many people have wondered if the city would ever get the three buildings damaged by fire in February of 2009 removed. The City Council this week did formally vote to uphold the city ordinance requiring that the basements be removed. Slight says City Administrator Luke Nelson has worked with those involved and has a tentative time frame calling for completion of the demolition no later than July.

KWBG HEADLINES ON APRIL 7, 2010

OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden City Council continued to move forward with plans to deal with downtown buildings considered nuisances. The Council met with one building owner, Daryle Johnson this week. Johnson told the Council he planned to try and preserve the building if possible. He would not reveal plans to the Council but did agree to meet with them in two-weeks. The Council is concerned about Johnson’s plans because they are considering demolishing a neighboring building.

BOONE, Iowa---Engineers and contractors met in Boone Wednesday to discuss a change order for work last year on the city’s sanitary sewer rehabilitation project. Work at the city’s underpass was estimated at some $55,000. The work did not go according to plan and the contractor submitted a change order asking for an additional $148,000. The Council refused the contract and rejected a recent appeal. It’s not certain what the impact will be on the $3.3-million dollars worth of work under contract this summer.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Community Endowment will be making awards of more than $105,000 to 20 non-profit entities in Boone County in two-weeks. Each April, the Endowment Board distributes dollars from the fund established to re-allocate state gambling revenue. The year the Board received 33-applications seeking more than $203,000.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) - Governor Chet Culver has signed into law two measures that improve benefits for Iowa's military families. One allows benefits paid from the Veterans Trust Fund to be exempt from state income taxes. That fund is to help veterans pay for travel to get medical care and for jobless benefits.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say the city's first homicide of the year is a fatal domestic shooting that apparently stemmed from a fight over alleged marital indiscretions. Donte Gilmore has been arrested in the death of his wife.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say Iowa will be receiving more than $18 million in federal funding to turn around its lowest achieving schools. The funds are part of the $3.5 billion that will be made available to the states this spring from money set aside in the 2009 budget and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines fire officials say an 18-month-old child suffered burns after falling into a fire pit during an Easter egg hunt last Sunday. Authorities say fire pits - often used for cooking hot dogs and marshmallows - aren't allowed in Des Moines.

KWBG HEADLINES ON APRIL 6, 2010

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council selected Boone business owner Kevin Hicks to join them on the City Council. Hicks, was one of three to express interest in being appointed to the Council. The Council made its decision with a secret ballot. Former Councilmember Travis Stevenson was second in polling and Steve McCoy, a long time member of the Park Commission was third. There could still be a petition submitted calling for a special election which the Council had hoped to avoid.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County officials were a little surprised by a Department of Human Services decision to made the Boone office a part-time office. DHS reorganization this week had the Boone County office and 22-others become part-time. There are 42-fulltime offices remaining in the state. Boone County is the 24th largest county and has had a higher volume of clients that some of the counties that will remain fulltime. The service change is slated for July 1st.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Hospital is appealing a decision to have their skilled nursing unit closed. The decision was initially made by staff at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Kansas City. The decision was just made this year, and Joe Smith, Boone County Hospital Chief Executive Officer says the appeal to Washington could take several months.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say a 25-year-old man is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his 23-year-old wife. A police spokesman says officers found Randi Gilmore dead of a gunshot wound Monday afternoon in the rental home she shared with her husband, Donte Gilmore, and three children.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa man now faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of possessing child pornography in a federal court. Thirty-year-old Kyle Conry of Dyersville entered the plea in Cedar Rapids yesterday.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - Fort Dodge will pay city employees who want to attend rally to support a casino, but not those against it. Mayor Matt Bemrich and City Manager David Fierke said Monday that those workers will have to take time off. They cited a resolution approved by the council last month supporting the casino, saying paying employees is part of that support.

KWBG HEADLINES ON APRIL 5, 2010

BOONE, Iowa---There are three people interested in being appointed to the Boone City Council to represent the 4th Ward. Letters of interest were received from former Council Member Travis Stevenson, former member of the Park Commission Steve McCoy and businessman and contractor Kevin Hicks, owner of Hicks Construction. The Council will discuss the candidates and could make a recommendation for appointment to fill the vacancy created with the resignation of Glen Thomas in March.

BOONE, Iowa---The Department of Human Services has announced some major changes at the Boone County DHS office. Staff members were told Monday that the Boone Office will become a part-time office effective July 1st. 23-counties are being changed from fulltime to part-time. Charles Krogmeier, DHS Director says clients will receive services through reduced hours or by appointment. He says the changes are needed to deal with expected staff reductions and changing logistics.

Boone, Iowa---State Representative Donovan Olson, Democrat from Boone has formally announced his intent to seek re-election to the seat he currently in the Iowa House of Representatives. Olson was first elected to the District 48 seat in 2002. District 48 includes most of Boone County and a part of Dallas County.

KWBG HEADLINES ON APRIL 2, 2010

BOONE, Iowa---Spending was not cut as much as many people think, that according to State Senator Jerry Behn. Behn told KWBG that the general fund portion of the state’s budget is balanced, but he says there’s additional spending of one-time funds that will push overall spending to just short of $6-billion. Behn says he believes the legislature will start the next session in another budgetary hole.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council had hoped to get some relief for residents by getting a delay in the next segment of the city’s sanitary sewer rehabilitation project, but it doesn’t appear that will happen anytime soon. The Department of Natural Resources has denied the request, but has agreed to meet with Council during their meeting Monday to discuss the issues. Council members have been concerned about rate increases and the impact on the public.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council has been without representation from the 4th Ward, the northwest part of the city since early March, but that could be resolved during Monday’s Council meeting. Interested residents were invited to submit letters of interest in an appointment to fill the unexpired term of Glen Thompson who resigned March 8th. The Council hopes to select a nominee. The appointment process was chosen to avoid the expense of a special election.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - Fire investigators made a stop at an antique appraisal show in Mason City after a box of live grenades showed up. Fire Capt. Jack Odegaard says someone brought a box of military items to the event at a hotel yesterday and that box included two live grenades.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) - A 5-month-old Newton boy burned to death when his car seat was placed on top of a stove. Authorities say the stove top was accidentally turned on and Chase Edward Finch's death has been ruled an accident.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal authorities are warning police that an anti-government group's call to remove dozens of sitting governors may encourage others to act out violently. The FBI says Iowa Gov. Chet Culver is among those who got letters demanding their resignations.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Authorities in Iowa City have filed criminal charges against a Cedar Rapids man accused of defrauding the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics out of more than $39,000. Authorities say the alleged fraud occurred on three occasions between October of last year and February of this year.

KWBG HEADLINES ON APRIL 1, 2010

BOONE, Iowa---State Representative Donovan Olson, Democrat from Boone, says he was pleased with the accomplishments of the recently concluded legislative session. Olson says it was the most difficult session he’s participated in, because of the difficult revenue, but he feels priorities were met as well as possible. He says the legislature is bound to adopt a balanced budget and they did.

BOONE, Iowa---The Iowa Department of Transportation has scheduled a public meeting for mid-April to review ideas for the work on U-S Highway 30 in eastern Boone County and western Story County. The project was proposed over the winter when the stretch of road became a circus ride for many. The public meeting on April 15th will be held at the United Community School beginning at 5:00 PM.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council’s Public Safety and Transportation Committee has maintained is prohibition of allowing organizations to do fund raising at the intersection of South Story Street and U-S Highway 30. The most recent request had come from the Pony Express Riders of Iowa, raising funds for Camp Sunnyside. The Committee has not granted anyone permission to fund raise at that location for several years.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - There's some good news in a regional economic index that surveys supply managers and business leaders in Iowa and eight other states. The Business Conditions Index for the Mid-America region has hit its highest level since May 2006. The result for March was the fourth increase in as many months.

WEST POINT, Iowa (AP) - Fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a blaze that destroyed a building housing a tax business and an apartment in the southeast Iowa town of West Point. No injuries were reported in the fire, but Fire Chief Chris Fullenkamp says at one point the flames were so intense that firefighters couldn't enter the building.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - A judge in Waterloo says a woman accused of child endangerment in the death of her baby is competent to stand trial. A defense attorney had argued that Tiara Williams wasn't competent because her severe depression makes her unable to assist with her defense. The trial is set to begin Monday.

ROCKFORD, Iowa (AP) - Authorities in Floyd County say a Nora Springs man is dead after his pickup truck collided with a Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock school bus. The bus was stopped three miles north of Rockford to drop off students yesterday when it was hit by the pickup driven by 83-year-old Robert Kruger.
