BOONE, Iowa---The formal ribbon cutting ceremony and Grand Opening were held Saturday at the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and Historical Center in Boone. The new museum is tied to the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. Construction on the building began in June 2011. The museum has been open since the Memorial Day weekend, while the finishing touches and displays were put in place. On hand for the event, James H. Andrew of Jefferson who donated his collection of railroad artifacts and support the project financially. Andrew's daughter Karen and son James also spoke to the crowd.

Fire Department Handles Gas Leaks
BOONE, Iowa---Boone Fire Fighters spent several hours dealing with a couple of gas leaks Thursday. The first at Fareway in the Boone Industrial Park when a semi that was being serviced rolled into a shed and struck a 500 gallon LP Tank. The shop area was evacuated. Fire fighters were able to shut down the tank on their own. Winds helped dissipate the gas. The second occurred Thursday afternoon at a residence at 1534 2nd Street. Emergency personnel block off the area, but did not evacuate. The home was ventilated. The cause of the natural gas leak remains under investigation.
Hospital Budget Up For 2013 Fiscal Year
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Hospital Board of Trustees have approved a proposed budget for the new fiscal year, that estimates net revenue and expenditures of about $45-million. That amount is up from the 2012 Fiscal Year budget by about $2-million. The biggest share of the increase will be the dollars being spent for the new digital health records transition. Chief Financial Officer Dave Mellett told Trustees this week that he included the IT Transition and the re-establishment of the 3rd floor skilled care unit so the increases in revenue and expenditures would be apparent.

Hospital Fiscal Year Ending In Good Condition
BOONE, Iowa---Even though another months worth of financial data will be needed to wrap up the Boone County Hospital's 2012 Fiscal Year, the early numbers are very encouraging. Through the month of May, the net gain for the year to date is just about $900,000. That compares to just under $650,000 a year ago. Hospital CEO Joe Smith says outpatient performance has been the leader all year long, while inpatient has been lagging behind budgeted amounts.
Hot Weather To Greet Gospel Fest
BOONE, Iowa---The Annual Herman Park Gospel Fest is planned for Saturday and Mother Nature promises to make it memorable by continuing to pour hot and humid weather into the KWBG area. The Gospel Fest brings together a number of artists from five states, performing Saturday afternoon at the Pavilion in Herman Park. Performances will begin at 12:30 PM Saturday. The Gospel Fest was organized by Harold and Betty Holmes six years ago. The public is welcome. The forecast calls for another day of 90-degree temperatures Saturday.
Moped Rider Injured
BOONE, Iowa---Boone Police have reported that a 60-year old moped operator was taken to the Boone County Hospital after he was struck by a car over the noon hour on Wednesday. Doyle Gene Swan was traveling south on Story Street, when a vehicle, operated by 52-year old Kathryn Qynn Fillmore of Ames pulled across Story Street at 15th Street and struck Swan. Fillmore was cited for failing to yield the right of way from a stop sign. Swan was cited for failing to properly display an appropriate safety flag. Officers estimated damages at $2,000. Swan was taken to the Boone County Hospital by the Boone County Ambulance. Boone Fire and Rescue assisted officers at the scene.

Traffic Situation Being Reviewed
BOONE, Iowa---Boone City Administrator Luke Nelson says recent accidents that have occurred at South Linn Street and US Highway 30 on the south side of Boone, have led city staff to begin discussing ways to address future concerns. The connection to US Highway 30 is expected to see increased traffic flow with the new Wal~Mart Store under construction. Nelson says the Council did have Wal~Mart provide a line of credit for a project to improve traffic flow at that location. He says staff will begin moving forward on alternatives, even before the new store is opened.
AgReliant Rezoning Expected In July
BOONE, Iowa---The proposed development of a seed corn production, conditioning and distribution facility in Boone County will move forward next month. The Boone County Supervisors have scheduled public hearings on rezoning request during their regular meetings July 11th, 18th and 25th. AgReliant, the company planning the facility west of Ogden on US Highway 30, wants to move ahead with the project in July. Boone County and Boone's Future have been working to facility some development incentives. AgReliant had considered a location in Dallas County before the decision to locate in Boone County.
Dangerous Heatwave Moves In
BOONE, Iowa---2012 has experienced a number of record high temperatures and the prospect could occur over the next couple of days. Getting a record high in March is a lot different than June and July. The best chance of a record may be Wednesday, 102 degrees set in 1934. Slightly cooler temperatures are forecast into the weekend. Health care providers caution the danger with heat is the prolonged exposure. People are also encouraged to check on the elderly, young children and those with health issues.

Supervisors Plan Hearing On Lease Purchase Agreement
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors will set a date to hold a public hearing on a proposed lease purchase agreement for the purchase and installation of the narrow band radio equipment being mandated by the federal government. The lease purchase agreement would be with the successful low bidder for the work. A sizable portion of the project is being covered by grants and the current E-9-1-1 proceeds. Rick Lampe, Boone County 9-1-1 Coordinator has projected that future E-9-1-1 proceeds should cover the cost of the lease purchase agreement.
Heritage Program, The Way We Were
BOONE, Iowa---The Historical Society's monthly Heritage Program will be about Boone in 1912. Charles Irwin, Executive Director of the Historical Society says the idea was past along by the Westhaven Community, previously the Evangelical Free Church Home, celebrating it's 100th anniversary of service. Irwin says Suzanne Caswell and he will present the program, Wednesday evening at 7:00 in the lower level of the Historical Society. There is no charge to attend.
Supervisors Consider Mental Health Region
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors will give consideration to an agreement that will allow the county to participate in the planning for a Mental Health Region. The Board was recently updated, at a meeting in Nevada, on the status of discussions that are being held. While the legislature worked at revamping mental health services in the state, Boone County joined Story County and others and began building their own region. The recent Story County meeting laid out some of the discussions being held and addressed what will need to be done. The planning agreement will formalize the work that's being done.

Chamber Seeks Volunteers for Farm Progress Show
BOONE, Iowa---Now that the 2012 Farm Progress Hay Expo is completed, attention turns to preparing the Central Iowa Expo site for the 2012 Farm Progress Show August 28th through the 30th. The Chamber and the Boone County Convention and Visitors Bureau are seeking groups and organizations in particular that would be willing to spend time at the Show. Rezoning Request
OGDEN, Iowa---A request to rezone over 70-acres west of Ogden on the south side of US Highway 30 has not drawn much criticism. Sandra Monck, Boone County Planning and Development Director says everything seems to be pointing to a positive recommendation for the County Zoning Commission to the Boone County Supervisors. AgReliant Genetics has selected Boone County as the site for it's new seed corn production, conditioning and distribution facility. Following Monday's meeting, the Zoning Commission will make a formal recommendation to the Supervisors.
Police Investigations
BOONE, Iowa---Boone Police, Sunday, began investigating two cases that involved people using vehicles without the owners consent. One was involved in a hit and run accident, about 1:00 AM Sunday in the 600 Block of Clay Street. The second was reported about 9:30 AM Sunday and included both complaints of using a vehicle without the owners consent and criminal mischief. Boone authorities were unavailable to comment about if the possibility the incidents may be connected.

Ogden Board Selects Superintendent
OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden School Board has extended a contract offer to Bradley Jermeland of Indianola to be the district's new Superintendent. The offer is dependent on Jermeland being released from his contract with the Indianola School District. The Indianola School Board will be meeting Monday evening and is expected to take action on the matter. The Ogden School Board began narrowing down it's list of candidates about two-weeks ago. The list was narrowed to semi-finalist and eventually to Jermeland and Steve Seid of Saydel. The two were interviewed this week. The Board will repeat the process beginning next Tuesday, looking to fill the High School Principal position.
Two Injured in Two Vehicle Accident Thursday
BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr report that two-people were hospitalized following a two-vehicle accident in northwest Boone County Thursday morning. Fehr says deputies investigated and reported that 19-year old Aerial L. Hess of Dana failed to yield the right of way at an intersect and collided with a semi operated by 57-year old Dean A. McCoy of Lanesboro. Both drivers received non-life threatening injuries and were transported to the Boone County Hospital by ambulances. Damages were estimated at some $10,000.
Boone County Youth Participate in Conference
BOONE, Iowa---Next week, the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference will bring about 900 high school youth from across Iowa to Ames for the annual 4-H Conference and Roundup. Boone County will have 20 participants this year. The theme this year is "Brighten Your World" and is organized and carried out by the 2011-12 State 4-H Council members. Council Selects New City Attorney
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council quickly voted Monday and directed staff to develop a contract for City Attorney with Jim Robbins. Robbins is currently the Boone County Attorney and is expected to step away from those responsibilities to become City Attorney later this year. The City Council had sought quotes for services for the contracted position. Robbins and current City Attorney Alan Schroeder submitted quotes. Robbins proposal appeared to be about $20,000 more than Schroeder's, but Mayor John Slight on "Tuned In" said the City is billed extra by Schroeder for trial. Schroeder has been the Boone City Attorney for more than 30-years.
Tuesday Morning Drug Arrest in Boone County
PILOT MOUND, Iowa---Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says the Central Iowa Drug Task Force and the Boone County SRT executed a search warrant about 4:30 AM Tuesday on property near 140th and I Avenue near Pilot Mound. Fehr described the area as very remote with a trailer home that had no electricity. The search did result in the arrest of 36-year old Jerrad J. Fisher of Perry. Fisher is charged with a Tax Stamp Violation and manufacturing marijuana. Marijuana plants were seized from outside and inside the home. The investigation is continuing.
Council Approves Park Commission Appointment
BOONE, Iowa---Boone Mayor John Slight nominated Everett Johnson as his appointment to the Boone Park Commission, filling a vacancy created with the resignation of Phil Brown last month for health reasons. Johnson has previously served on the Boone School Board. Slight says he feels Johnson will be good addition to the Park Commission and noted that he had received more than a half-dozen applications for appointment from some very good candidates. The appointment is complete the unexpired term of Brown until the next municipal election in November of 2013.

Warm Weather and Rain Forecast for Hay Expo
BOONE, Iowa---The 2012 Farm Progress Shows Hay Expo will be created by warm temperatures and possibly rain when the gates open Wednesday. Cooler temperatures will be found on Thursday. The Hay Expo has been in Central Iowa, but it was several years ago. This year, Farm Progress Shows Matt Jungman said the show would be held in Boone in an effort to take advantage of the larger site and the ability to attract feeders and others dealing with forage issues. Several thousand are expected at the show which begins at 9:00 each day and ends at 4:00. Admission is free, but there is a $10 charge per vehicle. More information available here.
Ogden School Board To Make a Decision This Week
OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden School Board will finalize work on a search for a Superintendent this week. Last week, School Board members did narrow down the list of applicants to the top four or five. Interviews were held last Wednesday and the top two candidates were identified. Steve Seid of a Saydel School District and Bradley Jermeland of the Indianola School District. Seid will meet with focus groups and interview with the Board Tuesday, Jermeland on Wednesday. The Ogden School Board hopes to offer a contract to one of the two Wednesday evening.
City Attorney Decision
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council will hold a special meeting Monday evening, to try and complete a review of qualifications from candidates for City Attorney. Current City Attorney Alan Schroeder has submitted information and Boone County Attorney Jim Robbins has also submitted a proposal. Robbins has indicated that he will be stepping down as County Attorney later this year. Two weeks ago, the Council visited with both candidates, but were unable to make a decision. Boone Mayor John Slight said on KWBG that the Council is elected to make difficult decisions and he expects a decision at the end of the special meeting.

Two Killed In Saturday Accident
BOONE, Iowa---The Iowa State Patrol has identified the two people killed as a result of a two-vehicle accident on US Highway 30 Saturday. 77 year old Dorothy Peter and 80-year old Delbert Peter, both of Boone, were passengers in an SUV driven by 15-year old Daniel Peter of Ames. The patrol says Peter was traveling west on US Highway 30 and was changing lanes in an effort to make a left turn, when it was struck by a west bound Hummer limousine operated by 43-year old John Barker, Junior of Des Moines.
Two occupants of the limousine were flown to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for treatment of their injuries. They included 28-year old Danielle Snook of Davenport and 24-year old Loyd Hise of Guthrie Center. Snook and Hise were members of a wedding party. Snook had been married in Boone shortly before the accident.

School Board Approves Staff Contracts
BOONE, Iowa---Boone Superintendent Brad Manard says the district is in pretty good shape with staff members for the 2012-13 school year. School will actually begin in just over two months. Manard says positions that were vacant from unexpected resignations have been filled and the board has approved the structure for the music department. Boone had three full-time band instructors but will tackle the next year with two full time and one part time staff member. Manard says Chris Truckenmiller and Dalene O'Brien will work together at the high school and middle school. Rose Kundel will direct elementary band.
Little Additional On Child's Fall
BOONE, Iowa---Boone authorities have not provided any updated information on the fall of a 17-month old child from a second floor apartment window Tuesday morning. The child was taken to the Boone County Hospital Emergency Room and then flown to a Des Moines Hospital. There was no update on the child's condition. Authorities had said the child had climbed onto a couch and pushed against the screen until it popped out. The unidentified child fell onto the grassy surface below the window and was awake and crying when authorities arrived. The apartment building is located at 304 Ringgold Street on the west side of Boone.
Fun Days Begins Thursday
OGDEN, Iowa---The annual Ogden Fun Days community celebration begins Thursday, with activities for the whole family. Things will begin with the Senior Food Stand in the park and the carnival. For the first time, there will be a drive-in movie. Bret Pierce, Fun Days Co-chair said on Tuned In last week, they're pretty excited to see how the drive in movie comes together. It will be held at the Ogden High School in the parking lot. There is a cost of $5.00 per car load.

Child Falls From 2nd Floor Window
BOONE, Iowa---Boone Police have been investigating a report fall by a child from a second story window Tuesday morning. Emergency responders were at the apartment building in the on Ringgold Street, just off Mamie Eisenhower. The unidentified child was taken to the Boone County Hospital Emergency Room and was transferred to Blank Children's Hospital. Very few additional details have been made available at this time. The condition of the child has not been released.
Conservation Board Secures Land for Parking
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Conservation Board formally accepted an agreement with Harold Grant of Madrid who owns property near the High Trestle Trail along QF Lane. The amount of traffic and the congestion created by parking problems have been occurring since the trail open. The spot is popular, because people will drive to the QF Lane, park there and walk to the Trail Bridge. Boone County Supervisors have taken steps to deal with parking on the road and other problems. It's hoped that developing a parking lot will provide some necessary relief.
Baltimore On Hand For Jobs Announcement
DES MOINES, Iowa---State Representative Chip Baltimore, Republican from Boone, was on hand this week when Governor Terry Branstad announced the launch of the Skilled Iowa Program. The Skilled Iowa Program is expected to serve both Iowa employers and Iowans wishing to utilize their skills through assessments and a readiness program. Ogden School Board to Narrow Superintendent Candidates
OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden School Board will be meeting Monday and will have a pretty busy day. The Board will be meeting at the Middle School Media Center at 5:00 to narrow down the field of candidates for Superintendent. The Board has been working with Tryon and Associates to find a new administrator after Superintendent Bill Roederer resigned last month. The Board intends to conduct interviews the middle of next week. The special, closed session meeting will be followed by the regular board meeting, again at the Middle School Media Center.
Week 2 of City Wide Clean up Next Week
BOONE, Iowa---Residents that live on the south side of Mamie Eisenhower Avenue will be setting out items on their parking this weekend, for the second week of the Boone City wide clean up. Boone Mayor John Slight says the cleanup has been very beneficial for residents. He says residents will be able to set out items that qualify to be picked up on Sunday so Public Works can put together their plan for pickup on Monday. For those that wish to dispose of appliances, but don't want to pay the fee, there's a plan in place to work with Midwest Appliance Recycling to take items at the Boone City shed on Saturday the 16th. Community Theatre Youth Workshop Rescheduled
BOONE, Iowa---Boone Community Theatre has rescheduled the planned Summer Youth Theatre Workshop. Originally set to begin this week, the program will begin on June 18th and will continue for 4-weeks. Mary Maybee is on the Community Theatre Board and says the change is due to a scheduling conflict. Sign up is still being taken for those students that have completed 5th, 6th or 7th grade this past year. The cost is $10 for the four week program. Farmers Market Comes to Downtown Boone
BOONE, Iowa---After years of locating the Boone Farmers Market in the parking lot of Wal~Mart on the south side of Boone, organizers will move to the parking lot of Family Video and Pappa Murphy's Thursday. Chamber Executive Director Kurt Phillips says he's excited about the change, especially the potential for the change. Phillips says the Boone Farmers Market is a popular event and the relocation is being embraced by downtown businesses. Phillips says he expects to effort to grow and expand throughout the summer. Initial discussions included locating the Farmers Market on the empty lot at 8th and Story Streets. However, the property is for sale and the city officials wanted to make sure it would be available if an offer is received.
Transportation Available for Summer Lunch Program
BOONE, Iowa---Organizers of the Boone Summer Lunch Ministry have announced that Boone County Transportation will be available to bring children to the lunch sites available in Boone. Those sites include the Open Bible Church, the Salvation Army Church, Marion Street United Methodist Church and the American Legion Cabin. Children are encouraged to walk to the nearest site, but if the walk is to far, parents or guardians should call Boone County Transportation to pickup and return children. Lunches are served at the four sites from 11:30 until 12:00 Noon and must be eaten on site. This program is a collaboration of Boone Churches and will provide meals to children during the summer, beginning Monday. Council Considering Revamped Livestock Ordinance
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council will continue to consider an ordinance dealing with livestock within the city limits, but will deal with a proposal that's been extensively modified. The proposal began with the city Plan and Zoning Commission and would have dealt with increases in numbers, what would happen when property changed hands and so on. In May, the Council directed City Attorney Alan Schroeder to begin developing a finalized version of the ordinance. This week, City Administrator Luke Nelson told the Council that additional review of the proposal found it to be a little harsh. Nelson proposal to the Council for consideration will be an ordinance that will make use of the Conditional Use Permit process that's already in place. Additional work is expected on the ordinance amendment that could come to the Council later this month.

Supervisors to Participate in Watershed Authority.
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors have approved taking part in a Watershed Authority being developed for the Squaw Creek Watershed. Boone County is one of four counties involved. The others are Hamilton, Story and Webster Counties. The group will also include each counties Soil and Water Conservation District and the cities of Ames, Gilbert, Stanhope and Stratford. The Watershed Authority is in it's early stages of development and is expected to pursue grant dollars to assist with efforts to improve drainage and flooding.
Good Trust Commits to Wellness Center
OGDEN, Iowa---Ogden City Administrator Donovan Olson says the Leonard Good Trust has committed $500,000 toward a planned Wellness Center that would be constructed in downtown Ogden. The Wellness Center is the culmination of efforts to demolish a couple of dangerous buildings and develop the property into a usable facility. Ogden has been working with representatives of the Boone County Hospital on a long term lease to use the proposed building. Olson says work still needs to be done to secure additional funding for the project, currently estimated at $850,000.
Lampe Wins Republican Nomination
BOONE, Iowa---Former Iowa State Patrolman and current Boone County E-911 Coordinator Rick Lampe has won the nomination to be the Republican candidate for Boone County Sheriff. Lampe and Madrid Police Chief Rick Tasler both sought the nomination. The unofficial results have Lampe with 1,098 votes to 507 for Tasler. The current Chief Deputy in Boone County, Gregg Elsberry is unopposed and will be the Democratic candidate on the November ballot. The voter turnout in Boone County was pretty in step with the statewide turnout. Slightly more than 9% of the registered voters actually took time to cast a ballot. Tuesday Primary Election Day
BOONE, Iowa---Boone County voters really have only one race for the Primary Election Tuesday. The Republican candidate for Boone County Sheriff will be determined. Madrid Police Chief Rick Tasler and retired Iowa State Patrolman and current Boone County 9-1-1 Coordinator Rick Lampe are facing off to determine who will challenge Gregg Elsberry in the November General Election. Elsberry is currently the Chief Deputy. Sheriff Ron Fehr announced late in 2011 that he would not seek another term. Since there are no other races on the primary ballots, it's been reported that a number of people have switched party affiliation to cast their votes. The polls are open until 9:00 PM.
Supervisors Consider Watershed Authority
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors will give consideration to joining a watershed management authority for the Squaw Creek Watershed. The largest portion of the watershed lies in Boone County, but will also involve Hamilton, Story and Webster Counties. The establishment of the authority would be done through a 28E agreement. The Squaw Creek Watershed is in the Skunk River Watershed and empties into the Skunk River at Ames. It has been the source of a couple of serious flood events that have affect Ames and Iowa State University in particular. A presentation on the Watershed Authority Agreement will be part of the Supervisors meeting Wednesday.
Council Approves Leak Protection Program
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council has adopted an ordinance establishing a "Leak Protection Program" which is expected to help with high utility bills. The Council had liked the program, the issue was whether residents would be allowed to opt into the program or out of the program. Council member Steve Ray called for implementing the program, including all residential customers and then giving them time to opt out of the program, which will cost an extra 50 cents a month on the utility bill. Commercial customers will be allowed to opt into the program. Boone Mayor John Slight says it will take a couple of months to get everything in place. The program will allow residents with high utility bill caused by a leak to pay their average bill plus $100 and get the rest of the bill forgiven.

Free Lunch in Boone this summer
BOONE - Pastor Andrea Kraushaar of First United Methodist Church is leading the charge for a summer lunch program in Boone. Together with the Iowa Department of Education, several local churches are coming together to make sure that area kids, ages 1 to 18 can have at least one meal a day.The meals will be prepared at First United Methodist Church then distributed to four other locations in Boone: American Legion Cabin at 1928 Boone St., Marion Street United Methodist Church at 717 W. Fifth St., Boone Open Bible Church at 1224 Hancock Dr., and Salvation Army Church at 509 Benton St. No registration or identification is required to take part in this program. Lunch are available between 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Monday through Friday starting on Monday, June 11 through Wednesday, August 15. School in Boone is scheduled to begin on August 16th. The program is starting out with cold lunches, but all meals meet Food and Drug Administration nutritional standards. Children are allowed to take their fruit and vegetable home with them, but all other food must be eaten at the site. Volunteers are still needed to help prepare the meals and distribute lunches, supervise the children and clean up afterward. Auditor's Office open this Saturday for Absentee voters
BOONE - Boone County Auditor's Office open Saturday, June 2nd from 8am to 5pm for in-person absentee voting for the upcoming Primary Election. The deadline for in-person absentee voting in Monday, June 4th at 4:30pm for the June 5th Primary. Friday, June 1st is the final day for a request for an absentee ballot being sent in by mail is allowed.
Relay for Life tonight in Boone
BOONE - A person's reasons for participating in Relay for Life are a unique and special as the story that motivates him or her. Relay for Life is an opportunity to not only honor cancer survivors and remember people who have lost their battle with cancer, but also to raise funds and awareness to help save lives. Opening Ceremonies start at 6pm for tonight's Relay for Life event at Goeppinger Field in Boone. Participants in the Survivors Lap should begin registering at 5. Different events are scheduled throughout the evening starting with the Survivor and Caregiver Lap at 6; the Education Station from 6pm to Dusk; Woodward Drum Corp Performance at 7; Children's Inflatables from 7 to Midnight (there is a charge of $7 per child); the Parade of Teams at 7:30; the Bingo Hunt from 8 to 10; the Luminaria Ceremony at dusk; the Hope Lap at dusk; a Pizza Feed from 10:30 to 11:45; minute to Win It! from 10:30 to 11:45; conclusion at Midnight. Overnight Luminaria Ceremonies will continue from Midnight to 7:00am. At 9:00 am on Saturday, the Closing Ceremony will be held, and they will include a recap of the funds raised.
