BOONE, Iowa---After 21-years, the Boone County Hospital has officially turned the former Boone County "Y" building over to the "Y" of Greater Des Moines. When the Boone County YMCA ran into financial trouble in 1989, the Hospital acquired the building and operated it as Heartland Fitness Center. Since 2005, the "Y" of Greater Des Moines has operated the facility as the Boone County Family "Y". Hospital Chief Executive Officer Joe Smith says the YMCA of Greater Des Moines asked about the donation earlier this year and the Hospital Board of Directors agreed to the donation in August.
