4th Ward Councilmember
BOONE, Iowa---Kevin Hicks is the apparent winner in the special election held Tuesday in Boone. Hicks collected 51-votes to 46-for former Council Member Travis Stevenson and 20-for former Park Commission Member Steve McCoy. The three had shown an interest in being appointed to fill a Council vacancy. Circumstances resulted in a special election. Voter turnout was very light, less than 8-percent of the registered voters cast ballots. The Boone County Supervisors will canvas the results during a special meeting Monday.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone School Board had a chance to review the school district's new website during their Tuesday meeting. Dr. Brad Manard, Boone Superintendent says the new site will continue to be worked on and should be fully operational by the time school begins in 5-weeks. Roosevelt Kiosk
BOONE, Iowa---Some more fund raising will be needed to move cover the cost of an informational kiosk for the Teddy Roosevelt statue at McHose Park in Boone. Dr. John Murphy, a member of the Boone Park Commission says some $8,500 has been raised for the project that might cost nearly $14,000. Murphy says the project will hopefully be completed by late October. A rough drawing of the project is available to view elsewhere on this website.

Little League Lease
BOONE, Iowa---There's still no agreement between the Boone Park Commission and the Boone National Little League Board of Directors for a long term lease for the use of Parks property by Little League. The Park Commission scheduled a public hearing to deal with a new long term lease, but representatives for Boone National Little League expressed reservations about the lease. The Commission has tabled action until responses to questions raised by the Little League can be answered.
Logansport Water District
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Councils Utility Committee will once again review the most recent proposals for an agreement between the City and the Logansport Water District. Logansport has been trying to improve service by increasing capacity and water pressure. As plans developed, it was found that no agreement for service existed. The Utility Committee has indicated the agreement that's being developed will be the model for future agreements.
Luther Grant
LUTHER, Iowa---The City of Luther will receive $370,000 in state funds to help construct a sewer collection system and pump station. The grant is from the Iowa Finance Authority and will help defray the costs of a new $1.6-million waste water system. State Senator Herman Quirmbach and State Representative Lisa Heddens noted that details still need to be nailed down. Luther has been dealing with waste water issues for several years and has been under a mandate to deal with ineffective septic systems.

Special Election
BOONE, Iowa---4th Ward residents in Boone will pick a new City Council Member, Tuesday. Some have already voted and others will be able to cast their ballots at the Ericson Public Library. Council Member Glen Thompson resigned in March. The seat has been vacant since that time. Kevin Hicks, Travis Stevenson and Steve McCoy are on the ballot. Voting Tuesday will be from 12:00-Noon until 8:00 PM. The new voting location was selected because of the construction at the Franklin Elementary building.
Farm Progress Show
BOONE, Iowa---The 2010 Farm Progress Show will begin taking shape this week. Matt Jungmann, Show Manager, says some of the tents will begin going up this week. He says over the next several weeks, the site will gradually begin to grow into the 2010 show. Jungmann says all the outdoor exhibit sites are taken and only a few of the indoor booths are still available. Also, the final drive to attract volunteers, especially to help with parking, is underway. More about the show is available here.
Parade Route
BOONE, Iowa---The 2010 Boone County Fair Parade will take a whole different route this week. The Thursday parade will begin at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, travel east on 11th Street to Meridian, then south to Industrial Park Road then east to the Boone County Fair Grounds. The Fair Board, working with Boone Public Safety officials, planned the new route to avoid on going construction and demolition in the downtown area. The parade is Thursday at 5:30 and will be followed by the Fair Queen Coronation at the Community Building on the Fair Grounds.

Economic Development
BOONE, Iowa---Discussions about the future look of Economic Development in Boone County continue to move ahead. The Boone City Council's Economic Development Committee has been pursuing ideas for a couple of months, since the announcement by City Economic Development Director Darrel Rensink that he'll retire at the end of the year. This week, the Boone County Board of Supervisors hosted a discussion with Boone, Ogden, Madrid, Boone's Future and others about the direction of Economic Development. Chip Baltimore, Vice-President for Boone's Future says the opportunity to move ahead is very inviting.
Little League Lease
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone Park Commission will hold a formal Public Hearing during their meeting Monday to consider a new lease agreement with Boone Little League. Due to a variety of reasons, the lease from several years ago was considered null and void and had to be redone. Part of the discussions centered around high utility bills in winter months, but both sides have agreed to a compromise on the matter. The Park Commission will meet at the Park Office but will be able to move to the Herman Park Pavilion if there's a large crowd.
Extortion Charge
BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says an 18-year old Ogden woman has been charged with extortion following an investigation by the Sheriff's Department. Fehr says the investigation began after a complaint from the woman's former boy friend after she attempted to get money from him claiming she needed an abortion. Cristina A. Hefler was arrested on a warrant by Boone Police. Fehr says the investigation revealed that Hefler was not pregnant and had received over $1,000 from the victim.

Dam Project
BOONE, Iowa---The City of Boone along with the Natural Resources and Conservation Service and the Iowa Department of Transportation are moving ahead with a project that will modify the low head dam near the Boone Water Works. The City is moving ahead because of settlement in a lawsuit over a drowning several years ago. A public meeting to explain the project will be held at the Boone City Hall Auditorium, Tuesday July 13th at 11:00 AM.
Municipal Band Festival
BOONE, Iowa---The 19th Annual Iowa Municipal Band Festival will be held at the Herman Park Pavilion in Boone Saturday. Director of the Boone Municipal Band, Dave Richardson says he thinks the Pavilion is a key to the success of the annual event. A big attraction this year will be the first time appearance of the Iowa Military Veterans Band. Municipal bands from Boone and Ames are the only two that have appeared in all the Festivals.
Economic Development
BOONE, Iowa---Representatives from the City of Boone meet Thursday with Boone County Supervisors and other County representatives to talk about Economic Development and a possible Economic Development Director. It was announced earlier this year that Darrel Rensink, the current Economic Development Director for Boone will be retiring. Since then, discussions have begun with other entities to determine the best was to fill such a position. Boone Mayor John Slight has said that city should have a point person for Economic Development.

Construction Delays
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council has expressed a great deal of concern over the ability of H & W Construction to meet the deadline for completion of the first part of the third phase of the city's sanitary sewer rehabilitation project. Council Members discussed the issue during a regular meeting Tuesday evening. Boone Mayor John Slight says work is proceeding, but he agrees there's a concern about getting work completed in time. He says the the extremely wet June has created numerous problems.

BOONE, Iowa---Residents in Boone's 4th Ward will be selecting a new City Council Member during a special election next Tuesday. Three candidates did file to be on the ballot, former Council Member Travis Stevenson, former Park Commission Member Steve McCoy and Boone Businessman Kevin Hicks. The three are looking to fill the unexpired term of Glen Thompson who resigned in early March for personal reasons. Voting next Tuesday will be held at the Ericson Public Library between 12:00 Noon and 8:00 PM.
Flash Flooding
BOONE, Iowa---Heavy rain closed a number of rural roads in northern Boone County Wednesday morning. Boone County Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Morlan says "P" Avenue, three and a half miles north of Boone was covered by water for several hours. The Boone County Engineer's Office reported several gravel roads also topped by water. The National Weather Service reported an estimated 3-inches of rain in less than 2-hours on already saturated ground.

Boone City Administrator Luke Nelson had said the work was delayed when the City was asked to apply for additional, unspent Neighborhood Stabilization Grant Funds to help cover the cost of the demolition.

Rain Sunday prohibited the contracted company from setting up the display. There was a little drizzle Monday, but that didn't affect the show. The collected nearly $5,000 in donations from residents, businesses and by turning in pop cans to pay for a share of the show.

Story Street Remains Closed

BOONE, Iowa---A plan to have Story Street opened this weekend is not going to work out. Boone officials had hoped construction of the sanitary sewer rehabilitation project that closed the intersection of Story and 6th Street last weekend, would be far enough along to be open. The construction site has been plagued by the wet weather from last weekend. In addition, demolition of three buildings in downtown Boone is expected to begin Monday, but City Administrator Luke Nelson has said the contractor hopes to keep the street open.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors will consider approval of a Preconstruction Agreement with the Department of Transportation for the planned reconstruction of US Highway 30 from near the junction of Iowa Highway 17 to University Boulevard in Ames. The preliminary portion of the project will begin later this summer with the construction of crossovers between east and west bound lanes. Reconstruction of the highway is expected in 2011.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone businesses and residents have stepped up in an effort to put on this year's 4th of July fireworks display. As of Thursday, nearly $5,000 has been turned in to the city hall to help cover the $10,000 cost of the fireworks display. About a third of the money raised has come from Boone Mayor John Slights campaign to collect pop cans with the proceeds to go to fireworks. Slight has said anyone willing to make donations can still do so. He says any amount over and above the cost of the show will go toward next years fireworks display.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Conservation Board has a new County Naturalist. Emily Klein was formally approved as a Boone County employee earlier this week. Klein begins her duties immediately for the Conservation Board. She is a native Iowan, growing up on a farm near Grinnell. She received her Bachelor's degree from Iowa State and a Masters from Florida Atlantic University. Klein says she's worked in Florida, Texas and Illinois but says it feels good getting back home in Iowa.

The downside, the level at Lake Saylorville is not dropping as quickly. Morlan says US Highway 30 west between and Boone and Ogden is expected to remain closed for another week.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County will undertake a road resurfacing project on County Road E-26 or or 170th Street between Kale Road on the east and P-70 or "H" Avenue on the west. The $807,000 project has been planned for some time and will include recycling and resurfacing that road. County Engineer Bob Kieffer says the road will remain open to traffic during construction, but residents need to remember is will be a construction zone. Work is expected to be completed within the month, weather permitting.

The meeting is required to begin the new fiscal year and will include action on various appointment and approval of the budgeted appropriations. All wages and salaries are also approved. BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors decided to close the historic "Wagon Bridge" west of Logansport to vehicular traffic. However, the Board included the word temporary in their resolution to allow them time to try and come up with a plan to preserve the structure. The Supervisors were greeted by a roomful of residents opposed to closing the bridge. A petition with some 600-signatures opposed to closing the bridge was also presented to the Board. County officials says the bridge sustained substantial damage when it was struck by a tree during spring flooding.

Boone County Emergency Management Coordinator, Dave Morlan, notified the KWBG Newsroom that the DOT has decided to close Highway 30 between Boone and Ogden at 7 pm on Monday evening. Originally, the thought was the water would not be high enough to create issues that would necessitate the closing until 2 or 3 am on Tuesday morning. However, water at the edge of the roadway late Monday afternoon forced officials to make the closing call earlier than anticipated.

City officials closed the street Saturday morning. City Administrator Luke Nelson says with luck and cooperation from Mother Nature, they hope to have the work completed in 7 working days. The building currently houses the activities of the Boone County Family YMCA. The discussions would allow the building to become the property of the "Y" of Greater Des Moines. No final decisions have been made, but Trustees would like to see a proposal when they meet in July.

Net revenue through May exceeded the budgeted amount by some $350,000 and was ahead of the 2009 pace. Net income was over $625,000, which did trail budget projections but was ahead of last year's amount of more than $578,000.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Building Department Staff has recommended that the City Council change the city's Zoning Ordinance to allow Small Wind Energy Conversion Systems with the city. The staff also recommended that the City Council revisit the proposed ordinance change in another year. The formal request to change the ordinance was made by Solar FX, an Ames based company. BOONE, Iowa---A very popular city subsidized program, called the Personal Property Protection Program will continue next fiscal year, but will offer smaller grants to residents who make efforts to protect their basements from sewer backups. Initially grants of up to $5,000 were made available to residents cover the cost of disconnecting perimeter drain tile. That amount continues to be reduced and will be at $2,000 in the next fiscal year. The grant is expected to still cover a substantial portion of the costs.

Kevin Hicks, Travis Stevenson and Steve McCoy were seeking appointment to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Glen Thompson in early March. Police Dog

As part of last night's city council meeting, the council was introduced to the Police Department's latest member, officer Shocker. The new police dog is following in the footsteps of Rommel, who passed away some time ago. Slight says that not only does the dog need to be effective for drug enforcement, but represent the department with PR opportunities with our youth. He hopes to continue to see Shocker used as a visible presence on the force. He also said that as of last night both Shocker, and his handler Officer Frasier are on the job.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone City Administrator Luke Nelson says demolition of three downtown buildings is now scheduled to begin July 5th. Nelson says it's about a month later than anticipated, but the availability of additional grant money to help cover some of the cost will be worth it to tax payers. The buildings were damaged by fire in February 2009. The demolition contract calls for the preservation of many items from the Mason Building at 801 Story Street. Some of the material will be used to develop a kiosk in McHose Park at the Theodore Roosevelt statute.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors quickly approved a third consideration of a social hosting ordinance during their meeting Tuesday. The ordinance was developed by the Boone County SAFE Coalition with the help of law enforcement and the Boone County Attorney Jim Robbins. The ordinance offers law enforcement civil penalties to use against people that host parties for underage youth. Earlier, Boone Police Chief Bill Skare says it's another tool for law enforcement to use. He said he prefers criminal charges if possible, but sometimes the evidence is just not available. Ogden and Madrid are still moving ahead to adopt similar ordinances. Boone has already adopted it's version.

The Commission and other city officials have not been satisfied by the work done by CTI, the contractor that reconstructed the trail after the sanitary sewer rehabilitation work was completed. By contract, CTI is permitted to deal with the problem by grinding down the bumps. The city is currently withholding $20,000 in funds. Park Commission John Griener says the Commission might not win, but the work is just not acceptable.

BOONE, Iowa---Habitat for Humanity of Boone and Greene Counties will begin a series of seminars Monday, geared for those that want to be home owners and current home owners. Erich Kretzinger, Executive Director of the local affiliate says the board is interested in expanding it's service to the residents, not just partner families. Kretzinger says the first seminars deal with personal financial and credit issues. He says there will be five seminars over a ten week period.

The special election will be held July 13th and will determine who will represent the city's 4th Ward. Council member Glen Thompson submitted his resignation in March. The Council did selected an appointment, but did it by secret ballot. When the matter was reconsidered, an appointment was not possible because of the lack of action within a specified time frame. BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr reports that deputies investigated a number of weekend accidents. One, last Friday evening west of Ogden did send one-driver to the hospital. 18-year old Bianca Aughenbaugh of Jefferson collided with a vehicle operated by 26-year old Kyle Watson of Decatur at the north junction of US Highways 30 and 169. Aughenbaugh was taken by Boone County Ambulance to the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. Watson was not injured.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County voters followed the statewide trends in Tuesday's Primary Election. Voters supported Terry Branstad and Roxanne Conlin. Voters also supported the campaign of Chip Baltimore over that of Bill Yewell of Ogden to challenge Donovan Olson in the November General Election. BOONE, Iowa---The Boone School Board this week, did approve salary increases for the District's Superintendent, Administrators and Central Office Staff. The action includes salary, benefits and other stipends. Superintendent Brad Manard received a 2.53% package. Administrators received a 3.2% package increase, larger because of a freeze in the 2008 salary. Central office support staff, not covered by a negotiated agreement or contract receive between $.15 and $.75 per hour.

Boone officials had dedicated some of their Neighborhood Stabilization Grant funds for the demolition of the Mason Building at 801 Story Street. BOONE, Iowa---The city's sanitary sewer rehabilitation project at 6th and Story Streets came to a standstill late last week, when the site was being prepared for boring. City Attorney Wayne Schwartz told the City Council that the contractor apparently struck and old cistern dating back to the 1880's. Unfortunately there was liquid in the tank and it had an odor of fuel. Testing is being done to determine exactly what was found and to determine the best way to treat the problem.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and State of Iowa Disaster Recovery have reported that nearly $659,000 went to some 222 residents for housing assistance. Governmental entities received some $1.4-million in reimbursement for everything from debris removal to infrastructure repairs.

BOONE, Iowa---KWBG listeners stepped up Thursday, pledging more than $2,000 to the City's 2010 4th of July fireworks display. This year, the City Council had to reduce the amount of dollars made available for the show. Since then, Boone Mayor John Slight has started a program to collected pop cans, but that will still be short of the $10,000 needed to pay for this year's show. Donations will still be taken by the City and can be dropped off at City Hall or with a utility bill. The annual fireworks display is held at the Boone Speedway on the south side of the city. OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden City Council this week took yet another step toward dealing with downtown nuisance abatement's. The Council approved a resolution to proceed with the demolition of the "Rattray" Building and is in the process of completing acquisition of the "Johnson" Building. The Council has been working for sometime to deal with the abatement or possible demolition issues, but hopes are that work will be done this summer. At the same time, efforts are being addressed to redevelop the available downtown property.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Joe Smith, hopes smoking issues will finally come to an end at the hospital. Over the years, the Hospital Board has supported limitations on smoking to the point that employees have been walking across to the street to smoke. The newest step is the prohibition of smoking by employees during work hours, regardless of whether the employee leaves hospital property. The Hospital will continue to provide smoking cessation assistance.

BOONE, Iowa---The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $291,000 to the City of Boone for the final phase of the city's sanitary sewer rehabilitation project. The City Council held off on the final phase earlier this year, to have more time to pursue other funding sources, like the EPA. Council members had a concern about increase utility rates and the ability of the public to handle the rates. The city is currently under a consent order to complete the project by this November or face penalties from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Efforts to gain and extension have not been successful.

The project includes trunk sewer lines on the east side of the city and will include cleaning, televising, new flow meters and eventually repairs and lining installation where necessary. The project will be over an above the million dollar storm sewer line that will be under construction later this year.

BOONE, Iowa---Volunteers are still be sought to take part in the IOWATER training at the Don Williams Recreation Area. Lisa Anderson, Boone County Environmental Education Coordinator says those that are interested can still attend Thursday. The class is from 4:00 until 9:00 and does have a $20 fee which is reimbursed at the end of the class. Volunteers are needed to complete the training and collect information that will help with long range planning for the future of the Don Williams Watershed.

STRATFORD, Iowa---Quick action by a farming operation in southern Hamilton County averted what could have been a bad fertilizer spill late last week. According to the Iowa DNR, the incident occurred about a mile north of Stratford on Westrum Farms when a fertilizer tank overturned into a dredge ditch. A dam was quickly constructed downstream and the contaminated water was pumped out an land applied on a nearby field. Because of the quick action by Westrum Farms and the efforts to prevent contamination from moving downstream, no enforcement action is expected. The spill would have affected the South Skunk River.

The ordinance is similar to one adopted by the City of Boone and is the same as the ordinance being proposed to both the Madrid and Ogden City Councils. The ordinance is the work of the Boone County SAFE Coalition and local law enforcement. It gives law enforcement a charge to use when there is not enough evidence to charge adults responsible for hosting parties for underage youth with a criminal offense. Supervisor Bill Lusher says the ordinance is something that should have been in place a long time ago.

BOONE, Iowa---An accident in the Ledges State Park, south of Boone, sent two-children to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Sheriff Ron Fehr reported Tuesday that 19-year old Nathaniel Jennings of Boone was driving on the "Canyon Road" through the water crossings when he lost control and struck the two-children. 6-year old Destiny Pabst of Ames and 4-year old Austin Willis of Boone were taken to the hospital for treatment of what were described as non-serious injuries. Fehr says Jennings was cited for reckless driving. The accident occurred about 7:00 Monday evening.

OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden City Council will consider formal action to demolish and clean up some downtown building locations. The Council has been going back and forth on a couple of properties for some time and could bring the campaign to an end Tuesday evening. While the Council has had to deal with dangerous structures, work has been continuing to try and find something fill the void in the downtown.

The first area to see collection will be north of Mamie Eisenhower Avenue. South of Mamie Eisenhower will need to set out items next Sunday for collection next week. BOONE, Iowa---Pleasant weather greeted a large turnout for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Linnwood Park Cemetery in Boone. The event, hosted by the Boone Veterans Council and the Boy Scouts of America in Boone, featured comments from Lt. Colonel David Willett, Medical Readiness Officer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa National Guard. Willett is part of the massive call to active duty of some 3,000 Iowa guardsman. The unit will be serving in Afghanistan for a year. Willett talked about why, those who made the ultimate sacrifice, did so and he invited everyone to enjoy the freedoms that had been earned.

OGDEN, IOWA --The name of the individual killed in the early morning police standoff in Ogden has been released. 50 year old Randall Kimsey of Ogden was killed early Wednesday morning as Boone County Sheriff's Deputies returned fire in an attempt to enter the home. Kimsey was considered potentially suicidal, and fired on officers as they entered the building. Boone County Deputies Seargant Dallas Wingate, Zachary Zeutenhorst, Matthew Gray, and Detective Andrew Godzicki are on paid administrative leave until conclusion of the standard DCI investigation, standard protocol in all officer involved shootings.

Police standoff in Ogden

Ogden, IA.-
Boone County deputies responded to a phone harrasment complaint at 443 E. Sycamore St. in Ogden At 8:15 PM yesterday evening. When the deputy approached the residence with an Ogden officer, the suspect confronted them from the residence while waving a handgun in a threatening manner. The officers retreated and requested back-up. A female party in the home left without incident, but attempts to communicte with the suspect were unsuccessful. Information from the suspects family, as well as his past history indicated to the officers that he was potentially suicidal. The Special Response Team entered the building at about 1:30 AM, and were confronted by gunfire. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was shot. Mercy Air Life was called, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The name is being withheld pending notification of the family. The DCI was also called to investigate, standard protocol in all officer involved shootings.

DES MOINES (AP) - A federal agency is suing the city of Boone,
alleging it violated the law when it hired a younger person over an
older - and more qualified - applicant.
In the lawsuit filed Monday, the U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission contends that in 2005 the city hired as
municipal infractions officer a 25-year-old with little experience
over a 62-year-old Navy veteran with extensive management,
construction, electronic and communications experience.
The EEOC contends the city violated the Age Discrimination in
Employment Act when it did not hire Larry Cook.
The EEOC is seeking back pay and other damages for Cook and an
order barring Boone from future discrimination.
Boone's city administrator Luke Nelson, had not yet been contacted through official channels, and indicated the city will cooperate fully with all involved and added that the cities policy is to comply with all EEOC requirements.

Bluff Creek Triatholon

BOONE, Iowa---Organizers have seen a huge increase in 2nd Annual Bluff Creek Triathlon held in Boone County this weekend. The Sunday event will be held at the Don Williams Recreational Area in northern Boone County. Participation has been limited to no more than 600 participants. Boone County residents are encouraged to use caution Sunday while the event is underway. Participants will be making use of county roads for some of the bicycle competition. The Bluff Creek Triathlon uses routes similar to those used by the Iowa Summer Games.

BOONE, Iowa---A Webster City woman is hospitalized in Des Moines and three others were taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames following a two-vehicle accident east of Boone Tuesday afternoon. Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says 86-year old Erma Studley was traveling west and made a left turn in front of a vehicle operated by 38-year old Glen Anderson of Colo. Studley was taken to the hospital then was transferred to Des Moines. Anderson's passengers 27-year old Tarah, 28-month old Olivia and 8-month Emma were taken to Ames. The accident closed the west bound lanes of U-S Highway 30 for a short time.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says 17-year old Adam Brekke of Boone was operating an ATV when it rolled into the Honey Creek Ravine area south of Boone Tuesday afternoon. Brekke was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, 17-year old Alex Appenzeller was taken to the Boone County Hospital and was treated and released. Fehr says Boone Police, Boone Fire and Rescue, Boone County Search and Rescue, Boone County Ambulance and the Boone County Coroner were all at the scene.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says that a Boone teenager was pronounced dead at the scene of an ATV accident south of US Highway 30 on the south side of Boone. The accident occurred as two-teenage boys were riding the ATV and went off a drop off. The ATV land on one of the boys. Authorities have not released any names at this time, pending notification of family members.

BOONE, Iowa---After more than a month, the Boone City Council has approved an amendment to the city's tree trimming ordinance. The amendment was sought by the Boone Park Commission and requires commercial tree trimmers to meet certain standards. The project will be the fourth home built in Ogden. Project Manager Chad Thede says the property has been staked out and bids have been received for the digging of the basement and other dirt work. He says they hope to be digging within the week. The Tony and Brianna Schelle family are the partner family. The Schelle's have four daughters.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone County voters will be asked to consider an increase to the county wide surcharge of land line telephones. The question will appear on the November general election ballot. Currently, the surcharge is $.85 per line per month. The request seeks a $.15 increase to $1.00. The Boone County E911 Service Board voted to ask for the increase this week. Over the last 5-years, the revenue from the surcharge has declined by $30,000. Proceeds are used to fund the purchase of new equipment for all emergency responders in the county.

BOONE, Iowa---The Iowa State Patrol has released the names of the two-people who died in collision between and ambulance and a semi-truck in Boone County. Pronounced dead at the scene were 75-year old Norbert Hoffman of Carroll and 53-year old Sheryl Stoolman of Carroll. Hoffman was a patient being transported to Des Moines and Stoolman was an ER Nurse tending to the patient. Injured were the ambulance driver, 46-year old Robert Genzen of Manning and 45-year old Wendy Baker of Carroll. The driver of the semi, 49-year old Dennis Good of Ogden was not injured. The investigation revealed that Good pulled over to right to allow the ambulance to pass at the same time the ambulance attempted to pass on the right. The accident closed down US Highway 30 in western Boone County for several hours Thursday.

US Highway 30 has been closed at Beaver and traffic is being re-routed. The Boone County Sheriff's Department, Greene County Sheriffs Department, Emergency responders from Ogden, Grand Junction, Greene County and the State Patrol are either at or headed to the scene. BOONE, Iowa---The Boone School Board did not take any action to participate in the Iowa Department of Education's Race to the Top grant application. The Board refused to support the state's effort the first time earlier this year and Tuesday night failed to take action in support of the program. A major issue continues to be the requirement that efforts to make improvements in district's requires it to be part of the negotiated agreement with teachers. Many districts across the state have been split over the Race to the Top requirements.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone Park Commission took action this week moved ahead with a possible project that could save the city's outdoor skate pond. The pond has not been usable the past couple of winters. Estimates to dredge the pond exceeded $100,000 which was considered cost prohibitive. Former City Engineer Dale Eschliman has proposed redirecting the channel and donated his services to develop the plan estimated to cost about $12,000 to $15,000. The Park Commission has approved sending the plans to the appropriate regulatory agencies, the DNR and the Corps of Engineers for approval, prior to pursuing funding for the project.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone County Board of Supervisors have approved a second consideration to rezone a small parcel of property near the Ledges State Park to allow a minor subdivision. The 14-acres was acquired by E. P. Frazier, Inc. with plans to split off a couple of lots for development. Because the property is considered environmentally fragile, the County Zoning Commission recommended using a Conservation Overlay District which is meant to protect the property, while allowing development. The property is adjacent to the Deer Run Subdivision and the possible location of a new home to an existing structure is raising some concerns.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone Letter Carriers were elated by the support of the community during their "Help Stamp Out Hunger" food drive last week. Postal carriers reported collecting 5,251 pounds of nonperishable food items for local food pantries. The collection exceed the 2009 food drive by some 17-to-18-hundred pounds of food. Donations were turned over to the food pantry at Red Rock Community Action and the Salvation Army.

Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr reported that a deputy responded to the call about a quarter after four in the afternoon. Three canoes were tangled in some branchs near the Kater Shelly High Bridge. Boone County Search and Rescue and the Boone Fire Department Fire and Rescue were also involved. There were no reports of any injuries. No one was hospitalized.

BOONE, Iowa---Those who take Iowa Highway 17 on their commute to Des Moines will have to deal with a major detour next week. The Iowa Department of Transportation reports that the traffic will be detoured at Madrid and Granger, using Highways 141 and 210. The detour is needed because of the major reconstruction on the Des Moines River Bridge between Madrid and Granger. The DOT plans to replace the bridge deck this summer. Work is expected to be completed in August.

Similar ordinances are already in place in about a dozen counties and cities and allows law enforcement to issue a civil citation for violations. A municipal infraction usually carries a pretty good fine and for this ordinance will amount to $250 for a first offense and $500 for a second offense. Kelly Wooden, Boone County SAFE Coordinator says similar ordinances will be proposed to the Ogden and Madrid City Councils and to the Boone County Board of Supervisors.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council has selected July 13th as the date for a special election for residents of the city's 4th Ward. The 4th Ward position on the Council has been vacant since the resignation of Glen Thompson in March. Councilmember at Large, Gary Nystrom at the last meeting did say he had been contacted by a reliable source who told him one of the Councilmembers was aware of the time constraints for making an appointment and didn't say anything. Nystrom says the action shows a serious problem with the direction of the council.
BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council has selected July 13th as the date for a special election for residents of the city's 4th Ward. The 4th Ward position on the Council has been vacant since the resignation of Glen Thompson in March. Councilmember at Large, Gary Nystrom at the last meeting did say he had been contacted by a reliable source who told him one of the Councilmembers was aware of the time constraints for making an appointment and didn't say anything. Nystrom says the action shows a serious problem with the direction of the council.

OGDEN, Iowa---The Ogden City Council has approved condemnation proceedings to secure access to a final piece of property needed for a major storm sewer project. The project was submitted to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as a solution to dealing with inflow and infiltration problems. The City is currently under a mandate to complete the project, but so far has not been given an ultimatum for completion. The current time frame calls for bids in August and work being done this fall.

BOONE, Iowa---It seems that some of the smallest issues become the most emotional. It happens with sidewalks, snow removal and allowing garbage trucks in alleyways. The Boone City Council voted 4-2 to lift the ban that prohibited garbage trucks in alleyways. Boone Mayor John Slight says it's one of the issues he hears about with citizen complaints. But, Slight also says the city doesn't have the resources to maintain alleys if big garbage trucks cause damage. He says city staff will try to do some maintenance, but it will probably be limited. Slight made his comments on the KWBG Tuned In Program, Tuesday morning.

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council has accepted a bid for the demolition of three buildings in downtown Boone. A fatal fire in February 2009 destroyed two buildings and the city was in the process of condemning the third property at that time. The Council did not accept the lowest bid submitted by Hovey Construction, but did act on the recommendation of consultant and did accept the bid of Anderson Excavation Company from Omaha, Nebraska. The recommendation noted that Hovey did not have the necessary expertise to handle the asbestos issues tied to the demolition. The accepted bid is for nearly $297,000.

Kelly Wooden, Boone County SAFE Coalition Coordinator says the ordinance will allow law enforcement to use a civil penalty against parents or adults that host parties and allow young people to partake in adult beverages. Boone Police Chief Bill Skare says the ordinance will allow officers to issue a citation with a municipal infraction if they feel there's no evidence for a criminal charge.

BOONE, Iowa---Boone City Administrator will give the City Council an update on the special election that will be required to fill the 4th Ward vacancy on the Council. It now appears that the earliest days available for the special election will be in July. Luke Nelson is expected to make a recommendation for the Council during their Monday meeting.
