Council Approves Leak Protection Program

BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council has adopted an ordinance establishing a "Leak Protection Program" which is expected to help with high utility bills.  The Council had liked the program, the issue was whether residents would be allowed to opt into the program or out of the program.  Council member Steve Ray called for implementing the program, including all residential customers and then giving them time to opt out of the program, which will cost an extra 50 cents a month on the utility bill.  Commercial customers will be allowed to opt into the program.  Boone Mayor John Slight says it will take a couple of months to get everything in place.  The program will allow residents with high utility bill caused by a leak to pay their average bill plus $100 and get the rest of the bill forgiven.
