BOONE, Iowa---A multiple vehicle accident in eastern Boone County Wednesday morning claimed the life of 72-year old Julia Betts of rural Boone County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Betts was headed east on West Lincolnway near XE Place, right west of Ames, when her vehicle was struck head-on by a vehicle operated by 34-year old Ryan Smith of Gilbert. Betts was flown from the scene to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines where she was pronounced dead. Smith was transported to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines by ambulance.
